Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins

As a boy, the future Snake Eyes watches his father die after rolling double ones in a forced dice game. Twenty years later, fighting in underground matches, he takes yakuza boss Kenta's deal: help finding the killer in exchange for a job. He saves Tommy, Kenta's cousin and heir to the Arashikage ninja clan, and is taken to the Tokyo dojo to face three trials. It was all Kenta's plan, backed by Cobra, to steal the Jewel of the Sun. Snake Eyes steals it, spares his father's killer and regrets everything. With Akiko, Scarlett and a short truce with the Baroness, he takes on Kenta, who dies in the anaconda pit. Tommy loses his birthright and swears revenge. Scarlett reveals Snake Eyes's father was a Joe and invites him to join.

• Mid-credits Early in the credits, Tommy is on a private jet. The Baroness, dressed as a flight attendant, pours him whiskey and says she's there to make a deal, not to kill him: he lost an army, and she can get him a better one. Tommy tells her to call him Storm Shadow.

   Henry Golding was cast in August 2019, taking over from Ray Park, the Snake Eyes of the two earlier films. Andrew Koji stepped in as Storm Shadow, previously played by Lee Byung-hun.

   Filming began in Vancouver in October 2019 and moved to Japan in January 2020. The crew shot at Kishiwada Castle and the Engyō-ji temple and wrapped on February 26, just before the pandemic.

   "Snake eyes" is a roll of double ones. It's what the hero's father rolls right before he's killed, which is why the son takes the name.

   The Raid star Iko Uwais plays Hard Master, Tommy's uncle. In the earlier films and the comics, the Hard Master is the Arashikage clan's teacher.
