Quick recap

Fani is 16, lives in Minas Gerais, attends a convent school and sees everything as a movie scene. She pines for her biology teacher, Marquinho, and calls his house just to hear his voice. Her parents sign her up for an exchange program to spend her last year of school in England, and she gets in. Gabi and Natália celebrate, but Leo, her best friend, shuts down and drifts toward the rival crowd. After a party where he looks after her, their friends suspect something, and Fani denies it. She only realizes she loves Leo when he seems interested in someone else. They confess their feelings, and Fani chooses her dream and leaves.

4 what changed in the movie

What changed in the movie

  1. ChangeDad got smaller

In the book, Fani's dad is close to her and matters to the story. In the movie he shows up much less.

  2. ChangeMore room for Rô and Pri

In the book, which Fani narrates, Rodrigo and Priscila stay in the background. The movie shows more of their romance and of Rô's friendship with Leo, a nod to readers of Minha Vida Fora de Série.

  3. ChangeLines straight from the page

Much of the dialogue comes straight from the text, and the key scenes appear in full or as flashbacks. Paula Pimenta co-wrote the script with Bruna Horta and was involved in casting and production.

  4. ChangeA song from the wrong decade

The book is set in the 2000s, the era of MSN chats and notes passed in class. The movie keeps that feel in Fani's room and the phones, but ends on Ed Sheeran's "Perfect," from 2017.
