Quick recap

Peter, now Hegemon, agrees to rescue Achilles from China, thinking he can take over Achilles's network. Bean and Petra, knowing Achilles kills anyone who saw him weak, go into hiding and marry. With geneticist Volescu's help they create embryos, and one is implanted in Petra. The rest vanish. Achilles seizes the Hegemon's compound in Brazil, and the Wiggins flee. Bean learns his old classmate Alai has become Caliph of a nearly united Muslim world; Alai invades China and then India, and China drops Achilles. Cornered, Achilles offers the embryos in exchange for safe passage, but he sets traps. Bean sees through them and shoots him in the eye. Peter is Hegemon again; the embryos are still missing.
