Quick recap

Chasing his grandfather's ball, Goku runs into the Red Ribbon Army, which hunts Dragon Balls for Commander Red. He climbs Muscle Tower, fights General Blue over undersea treasure and even passes through Arale's Penguin Village. The army hires the assassin Mercenary Tao, who beats Goku. Goku climbs Korin Tower, trains with the cat master and defeats Tao on his return. On his own, he storms headquarters and brings the army down, while Red is betrayed by his own right-hand man. To find the last ball, the group visits Fortuneteller Baba and must beat her fighters. The last one is masked: Goku's grandfather, back from the dead for one day. Goku uses the balls to revive Bora and leaves to train alone for three years.

Trivia

  1. Behind the scenesA detour to Dr. Slump

Toriyama tried to steer the series back to adventure in this arc and added comedy with a visit to Penguin Village from Dr. Slump. When that didn't stick, fighting became the main theme for good.

Muscle Tower, which Goku climbs floor by floor, was inspired by the video game Spartan X (Kung-Fu Master).
