Quick recap

A parcel arrives for Robin holding a woman's severed leg. Strike has three suspects, all men from his past: stepfather Jeff Whittaker, whom he blames for his mother Leda's overdose; ex-soldier Noel Brockbank; and Donald Laing, a former soldier he once sent to prison. Short chapters show the killer stalking Robin. She tells Strike she was raped at university, survives a street attack and defies Strike to help a victim, which gets her fired. Strike learns Laing was living under another name and catches him with police help. Matthew confesses an old betrayal. Robin marries him anyway, but Strike turns up at the ceremony to ask her back.

  1. ChangeOut of the killer's head

The book cuts in chapters from the killer's point of view without naming him. In two episodes, the show can't really pull that off.
