Virgo Shaka

The Gold Saint with closed eyes, called the man closest to God

Shaka guards the sixth of the twelve temples, Virgo. Born in India, he meditates constantly and keeps his eyes closed to build up Cosmo. They call him the man closest to God, and he acts as if he believes it. Calm and aloof, he talks about life, death and justice like a monk, and he is one of the most feared Gold Saints in the Sanctuary.

The Virgo temple

When the Bronze Saints climb the twelve temples, Shaka believes the Pope stands for justice and that they are rebels. In the Virgo temple, he floors each one who arrives without even opening his eyes.

Ikki shows up and holds out longer than the rest. Shaka strips his senses one by one until he has nothing left. Cornered, Ikki blows up his own Cosmo to take Shaka with him, and the two vanish into another dimension. Shaka returns, and it is Ikki who tells him the truth about the false Pope. From then on, Shaka starts to see Saori differently.

A chosen death

In the Holy War against Hades, Saga, Shura and Camus return from the dead as Specters and reach the Virgo temple. Shaka meets them in the garden of the twin sal trees, where he says he will die.

The three use the Athena Exclamation, the attack forbidden among Gold Saints, and Shaka doesn't truly defend himself. He already knew what to do: by dying, he could enter Hades's realm through the eighth sense, Arayashiki. Before he goes, he leaves his comrades a rosary of 108 beads, one for each Specter.

The Wailing Wall

Shaka reaches the land of the dead through the eighth sense and follows the fight of Athena's Saints through the Underworld. At the end of the road stands the Wailing Wall, the barrier between the Underworld and Elysion that nothing can get through.

The twelve Gold Saints gather in front of it, including those who had returned as Specters. Together they light a Cosmo as bright as the sun and punch a hole in the wall. Shaka and the other eleven give their lives doing it, and the road to Elysion opens for the Bronze Saints.

Back, in Asgard

Shaka wakes up in Asgard with the other eleven Gold Saints, alive again with no idea how. The tree Yggdrasil, revived by Andreas Rise, drains their Cosmo and powers new God Warriors.

Like his comrades, Shaka goes into Yggdrasil's chambers to destroy the statues feeding the tree and awakens the Virgo God Cloth. The Gold Saints fight together until they learn the real enemy is the god Loki.

In comics and books

Shaka is modeled on the Buddha: his name comes from Shakyamuni, one of Siddhartha Gautama's titles, and he is shown meditating in the lotus position. In Japan, Yūji Mitsuya voiced him in the classic series.
