Ted is a teddy bear who came to life when John, at 8, made a wish. He was a celebrity for a while. Seth MacFarlane provides the voice and motion capture.
In 1985, 8-year-old John Bennett gets a jumbo bear for Christmas and wishes it would be his friend. A shooting star passes, and Ted comes alive. Word spreads, and he becomes a celebrity for a while. By 2012 he lives in Boston with John and his girlfriend Lori, enjoying a party lifestyle. Lori thinks John needs to grow up away from him.
Ted marries Tami-Lynn, and the couple want a child. In the adoption process Massachusetts rules Ted is property, not a person. He loses his job, his card and his marriage. John and a young lawyer take the case to court.
In the Peacock prequel, Ted lives with the Bennett family in Framingham between 1993 and 1995. After causing trouble while everyone was out, he is made to go to school with John, who is 16. That is where the series starts.
MacFarlane wanted to make Ted an animated series and pitched a family version at Hanna-Barbera. The bear was a 'leech' on the boy's family, according to Wikipedia.
