Sebastián

Nine months after the creatures arrive, Sebastián and his daughter Anna join survivors hiding in a bus depot. He wears a blindfold like everyone else, and no one suspects a thing. He says he knows where to find generators. The next morning he takes the group out on the bus, crashes it and pulls everyone's blindfolds off. One by one, they open their eyes and kill themselves.

Sebastián looks at the creatures and nothing happens. He is immune. The Anna at his side is a vision, and she praises him for "saving" those people and asks him to find the "lost sheep."

Sebastián's wife died in a car crash on day one. He hid in a church with Anna and met Father Esteban, who sees the creatures as angels and death as release. Later, Esteban's followers, immune like him, find father and daughter and force Anna to open her eyes. She dies.

Sebastián is forced to look too, but instead of dying he sees Anna. The vision promises he'll be with his family again once he has saved enough people. From then on, he follows the vision without question.

Sebastián joins Rafa's group: Octavio, Roberto, Isabel, Claire and Sofia, a German girl in Claire's care. They cross an empty Barcelona blindfolded, with dogs as guides. Sofia believes Montjuïc Castle, reached by cable car, is a safe place. Along the way, Sebastián tampers with the dogs' leashes and gets Rafa killed. Later he leads Octavio to his death. Roberto and Isabel die too.

Claire suspects him and shields Sofia. But Sebastián grows attached to the girl, starts resisting the vision of Anna and vows to protect them both.

Esteban's followers catch up. The vision of Anna still calls to him, but Sebastián chooses the two of them. He gets Claire and Sofia to the cable car and stays behind to face the priest. The two men kill each other, and Sebastián dies smiling.

Claire and Sofia reach Montjuïc, a secret military camp. Sofia finds her mother there, and Claire gives blood so scientists can work on a defense against the creatures.

Sebastián isn't in Josh Malerman's books. Àlex and David Pastor, who wrote and directed Bird Box Barcelona, created him.
