The thieving navigator who dreams of mapping the whole world

Nami is a thief who only robs pirates and a navigator who can feel a change in the weather before any instrument. She says she hates pirates and only cares about money, and she's saving up 100 million berries for a reason she tells no one. Her dream is to draw a map of the entire world.

The thief of Orange Town

The first time she sees Luffy, she calls him boss in front of Buggy's thugs and leaves him to deal with them alone. In Orange Town, Nami wants to steal Buggy the Clown's map of the Grand Line. To get close, she pretends to join his crew and hands over Luffy tied up. When the pirates order her to kill Luffy to prove her loyalty, she can't.

After Luffy beats Buggy, Nami takes the map and the treasure and travels on with him and Zoro, making it clear she's just a partner and not a pirate. She tells anyone who'll listen that she hates pirates and only wants their treasure.

Luffy, help me

In Cocoyasi Village, Nojiko, Nami's foster sister, tells the crew the truth. Nami was raised by Bell-mère, a former Marine who grew tangerines. When Arlong took over the island, Bell-mère was killed in front of her, and Arlong took the girl to draw maps for him, promising to give back the village for 100 million berries. That's why she stole.

When a Marine captain on Arlong's payroll seizes her savings, Nami realizes he was never going to keep the deal. She stabs the Arlong Pirates tattoo on her arm and, in tears, asks Luffy for help, and he puts the straw hat on her head. Luffy wrecks the room where Arlong kept her drawing. With Arlong beaten, Nami swaps the tattoo for a pinwheel and a tangerine and joins the crew for good.

Usopp gives her the Clima-Tact, a staff that creates weather effects. Against Miss Doublefinger, a woman covered in spikes, Nami figures out how the weapon works mid-fight and takes her down with a lightning bolt.

During the escape, Nami lures Zeus, Big Mom's living thundercloud, with clouds he can't stop eating, and turns Zeus against his owner. After Brook slices him in half, she threatens to finish him off unless he serves her. Zeus becomes her servant.
