Magnus Bane

At Jocelyn's request, Magnus took Clary's memories of the Shadow World and fed them to the demon Valak to keep her safe from Valentine. He meets Alec at a bar called Hardtail, and the attraction is instant. Ragnor Fell, Magnus's old friend, is killed by a Shax demon, and Magnus feels the loss.

At Alec's wedding to Lydia, Alec leaves her at the altar and kisses Magnus in front of everyone. Magnus also helps wake Jocelyn with the Book of the White.

Magnus and Alec start dating for real, with a first date and a first night together. Magnus stops Alec from killing himself under Iris Rouse's spell and helps Simon track down the vampire Camille, an old flame of his. When a summoning of the demon Azazel goes wrong, Magnus and Valentine swap bodies, and Magnus is tortured while stuck in his enemy's body until they switch back. He also sides with the Seelie Queen against Valentine and the Clave. Late in S2, he and Alec split up and then reunite.

For backing the Seelie Queen, Magnus loses the title of High Warlock of Brooklyn to Lorenzo Rey. He helps stop Lilith and, to free Jace from her control, gives his magic to his father, the demon Asmodeus. He and Alec clash over the Clave's lies about the Soul-Sword. Lorenzo later hands the magic back, but it nearly kills him, so Magnus gives it up again and becomes mortal. Alec even tries to bargain with Asmodeus on his behalf.

After a breakup with Alec, Magnus falls under Asmodeus's sway. He traps his father in limbo and seals the rift to Edom, stranding himself inside. Alec goes in after him, and they propose to each other. Magnus comes back with his magic restored, and they marry at the Institute. A year later, he's the first High Warlock of Alicante.

In the 2013 movie, Magnus (Godfrey Gao) hosts Clary and the Shadowhunters at his club and confirms he blocked her memories at Jocelyn's request. It's a brief role: the movie never gets to his relationship with Alec.

In the books, Magnus is around 400 years old and loves lying about his age. He shows up in nearly every Cassandra Clare series, from The Infernal Devices in 1878 to The Dark Artifices, and has books of his own, like The Bane Chronicles.
