John Bennett is Ted's best human friend. At 8, in 1985, he makes the wish that brings the bear to life. Mark Wahlberg plays him as an adult in the films, and Max Burkholder plays him at 16 in the series.
In 2012 John is 35, lives in Boston with Ted and his girlfriend Lori, and has a dead-end job. Lori wants to marry and thinks he will not go anywhere with the bear around. John tries to move Ted out but still spends most of his time with him.
In the second film, John and Lori are already divorced. He helps Ted and Tami-Lynn look for a donor to have a child and later stands with his friend in the case against the state to prove he is a person.
In the series, set between 1993 and 1995, John is 16 and near the bottom of the social ladder at John Hancock High. He lives with his father Matty, mother Susan and cousin Blaire, and shares classes with Ted.
Mark Wahlberg was asked to reprise the role for the series but was busy. That is why the series became a prequel with a new cast, according to Wikipedia.
