Edna Mode

The superhero costume designer

Edna Mode is the tiny designer who dresses the heroes, with a mix of German and Japanese in her accent and no patience for capes. She appears briefly in the films but steals every scene. In the second film and in the short Auntie Edna, she babysits baby Jack-Jack. She is voiced by Brad Bird, the director.

The woman behind the suits

Bob goes to Edna Mode to fix his old suit. She is the best and most demanding designer of heroes, gives quick fashion lessons and becomes the most talked-about scene in the film. Assuming Helen already knows about her husband's new job, she decides to make new suits for the whole family.

No capes

Edna explains why she hates capes: one got caught in a jet turbine and killed a hero, and others caused similar deaths. The speech became her signature. The scene is cited as an example of the darker humor that made The Incredibles Pixar's first PG-rated film. Edna also builds a beacon into the suits, which Helen later uses.

The director's voice

Brad Bird imagined Edna as a scientist and designer, half German and half Japanese, because he wanted to know who made the heroes' costumes. The name comes from EMode, a software Pixar used at the time. The voice came from the temporary storyboard recordings, and Bird kept it after several failed attempts to cast an actress. He calls her the most fun character in the film.

The unlikely sitter

In the second film, Bob calls Edna on Lucius's suggestion, and she babysits Jack-Jack, who shows one power after another. The stint led to the short Auntie Edna, which shows the unlikely sitter in action.

Auntie Edna

The short Auntie Edna shows the designer babysitting Jack-Jack during the events of the second film. It came out in autumn 2018 with the home release. As in Jack-Jack Attack, the fun is a sitter discovering, in real time, that the baby has way too many powers.

Off screen

In comics and books

Brad Bird voices Edna. Lily Tomlin was considered for the role but turned it down, feeling the director should do the voice.
