Mugatu hires him for a show and conditions him, with the song 'Relax', for an assassination. The journalist Matilda grows suspicious and tries to warn him.
In the second film, the center for kids he founded collapsed two days after opening. Matilda died, he lost custody of his son, left fashion and now lives in seclusion. Billy Zane shows up to persuade him to return and regain custody. An Interpol agent investigates dead pop stars, all with the same look.
The name Derek Zoolander came from two Calvin Klein models, Mark Vanderloo and Johnny Zander, according to Wikipedia.
