Clary Fray

The Brooklyn artist who finds out she's a Shadowhunter

Clary Fray lives in Brooklyn with her mother, Jocelyn, dreams of art school and has Simon Lewis as her best friend. On the night she turns 18, she sees a fight at the Pandemonium club that nobody else can see. It's the start of a life her mother has hidden from her since she was little.

Happy birthday

Clary turns 18 and gets into an art program. That same night, at Pandemonium, she sees Shadowhunters fighting demons. Jocelyn tries to tell her the truth and is taken by Valentine's men. With Jace, Alec and Isabelle, Clary learns about runes and finds out Magnus Bane wiped her memories at her mother's request.

To save Jace, she gives up her own memories to a memory demon. She learns Valentine is her father, and he claims Jace is his son too. At the end of S1, Hodge hands the Mortal Cup to Valentine, but the group manages to wake Jocelyn with a spell.

Lake Lyn

Jace learns they aren't blood siblings. Sebastian, the charming newcomer at the Institute, turns out to be Jonathan, Clary's real brother. At Lake Lyn, which is the Mortal Mirror, Clary kills Valentine. Jace dies in the battle, and she uses the wish granted by the angel Raziel to bring him back.

The angel's price

The Clave sentences Clary to death, and a ritual of Lilith's binds her to Jonathan with a rune: whatever hurts one hurts the other. She disappears with her brother and spends time under his influence, until Jace breaks the bond with the sword Glorious.

In the end, Clary uses a forbidden rune to defeat Jonathan, defying Raziel. The punishment comes fast: she loses her runes, the Sight and every memory of the Shadow World, and leaves the Institute. A year later, at an art show, Clary sees Jace through his glamour and reaches for the runes at his collar.

Another take: the movie

In the 2013 movie, Clary (Lily Collins) keeps drawing a strange symbol and watches Jace kill a demon at a club. Her mother vanishes after mentioning Valentine. At the Institute, Clary learns she's a Shadowhunter and that Magnus Bane blocked her memories. She hides the Mortal Cup inside a tarot card, but Hodge hands it over to Valentine, who claims to be her father. Clary fools Valentine with a fake Cup and pushes him through a portal.
