Alejandro Gillick

The assassin with a personal cause

Alejandro Gillick is a former Mexican prosecutor turned CIA-trained assassin. Benicio Del Toro plays him in both films. He talks little and moves without hurry, carrying a personal debt he won't collect from just anyone.

Sicario

The quiet man

Alejandro turns up at the task force meeting without introducing himself or saying what he does. He goes with Kate and the team to Juárez and, back in the United States, questions Díaz's brother Guillermo with brutal methods. He also saves Kate when a cop attacks her. During the tunnel gunfight, he takes over: he abducts a corrupt cop, Silvio, and goes after Díaz. At the end, he forces her to sign a statement that it was all legal.

Alarcón's debt

Alejandro worked for the Medellín cartel, and Fausto Alarcón ordered the killing of his wife and daughter when he was a prosecutor in Juárez. That is why he took the mission. After forcing Díaz to drive to Alarcón's estate, he kills Díaz and the guards and walks into the dining room. He kills Alarcón's wife and two sons and, last, Alarcón himself. For Matt, it's an operation. For Alejandro, it's a reckoning.

The tunnel

In the United States, Alejandro questions Díaz's brother Guillermo and learns the cartel uses a tunnel near Nogales to smuggle drugs. The team prepares to storm the tunnel. Alejandro doesn't tell Kate everything, and she gradually sees that his plans override the law. He needs to reach the boss, and the road runs through Díaz.

The soldier who disobeys

In Day of the Soldado, Matt calls on Alejandro to start a war between cartels. He kills a lawyer for the Matamoros cartel and kidnaps Isabel Reyes. When the operation goes wrong, the government orders Isabel and Alejandro eliminated. He refuses to kill the girl and flees with her across the desert, disguised as migrants. A young man, Miguel, recognizes him and is forced by the gang to shoot him. Alejandro survives, kills his pursuers and, a year later, finds Miguel in a Texas mall.

With few resources, they disguise themselves as migrants and pay traffickers to cross the border. After Miguel's shot, he regains consciousness shot through the cheek. A gang search party chases him, and he kills the pursuers by throwing a grenade into their car.
