Quick recap

In 1786, Poppy Bridgerton, a cousin of the Kent Bridgertons, wants a husband who can keep up with her mind. Walking the Dorset coast, she finds a smugglers' cave, gets captured and is carried onto a ship. Its captain, Andrew James Rokesby, has a rogue's reputation but secretly carries goods and papers for the British government, and he can't delay the voyage to Portugal. The two are stuck on the same ship, trading barbs and long talks. When Andrew learns she's a Bridgerton, he knows he'll have to marry her to avoid a scandal. In the end, he declares himself for real, and Poppy says yes.

What changed on screen

  1. Behind the scenesA princess who didn't make it

The first idea had Andrew escorting a princess from a made-up principality. That plot stalled, but the principality is still mentioned in the book.

  2. Behind the scenesA luxury puzzle

Andrew's dissected map is based on the earliest jigsaw puzzles, which were expensive status symbols at the time.
