Quick recap

Wrath has taken up his father's crown, but the throne is under threat: Xcor's Band of Bastards and part of the aristocracy want him out, claiming he has no pure heir and mated a half-human. Beth wants a child, and Wrath, afraid of losing her the way he lost his parents, reacts badly, which shakes the couple. He makes risky choices for the kingdom. In parallel, the book flashes back to the reign of Wrath's father. In the end, Beth gets pregnant, and Wrath puts the throne to a vote of the whole race, and wins.
