Phury has taken over as Primale of the Chosen and must father the next generation. His first mate is Cormia, a shy Chosen who wants more than duty. Phury carries guilt from years of sacrifice for his twin, Zsadist, and sinks into red smoke addiction, with an inner voice dragging him down. The war worsens as the lesser Lash gains strength, and the Brotherhood's mansion comes under threat. Phury hits bottom and decides to get clean. In the end, he and Cormia are together, and Phury uses his position to free the Chosen from the Sanctuary and let them live in the world.
