Quick recap

Eight years later, Mike and Marcus follow an ecstasy trail through Miami into a war between the Russian mob, a Haitian gang and the drug baron Johnny Tapia. Marcus is thinking of leaving the partnership, and Mike is secretly dating his sister Syd, who works undercover for the DEA. When Tapia kidnaps Syd and flees to Cuba, the duo put together a mission with the DEA and the CIA, cross the island and get her out. The escape ends in a minefield near Guantanamo, where Marcus takes down Tapia. Marcus decides to stay Mike's partner.

Hidden details

  1. Behind the scenesA script with too many hands

The final screenplay credit went to Ron Shelton and Jerry Stahl, but dozens of writers touched the script. Judd Apatow did a rewrite, and Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, not yet famous, helped with a few gags.

  2. Behind the scenesThe causeway they shut down

Shooting ran from July to December 2002, mostly in Miami. The eastbound lanes of the MacArthur Causeway were closed in August for the chase. On the other side of Bill Baggs park, 2 Fast 2 Furious was filming at the same time.

  3. Behind the scenesCritics sank it, audiences didn't

The film sits at 23% on Rotten Tomatoes ("two and a half hours of explosions and witless banter"), but audiences gave it an A on CinemaScore. It made $273 million worldwide, almost double the first film.
