Edward is an actor going nowhere in New York. He has neurofibromatosis, a condition that leaves his face visibly marked, so he only lands small parts, like a corporate training video. Shy and stiff, he spends his days alone in a tiny apartment with a leak in the ceiling that never stops dripping.
Things shift a little when a new neighbor moves in: Ingrid, a playwright hoping to stage her first play. They become friends, and Edward falls for her, but he cannot bring himself to say so.
At the same time, he signs up for an experimental treatment that promises to change his appearance. To his surprise, it works. With a new face, Edward decides to become someone else: he takes the name Guy, leaves his past behind and lets people believe Edward is dead. His new life looks perfect, until he finds out Ingrid has written a play based on her old neighbor, and that a man named Oswald is about to cross his path.
