Quick recap

Port Mahon, Minorca, April 1800. At a concert, Jack Aubrey, a lieutenant with no ship, nearly fights a duel with Stephen Maturin, a penniless Irish-Catalan doctor. That same night Jack is promoted and given the sloop Sophie. The next day the two bond over their love of music, and Jack signs Stephen on as ship's surgeon. Sophie takes prize after prize and beats the Cacafuego, a far larger Spanish frigate, but first lieutenant James Dillon is killed. Later, Sophie is captured by a French squadron. Jack watches the battles of Algeciras up close and faces a court-martial for losing his ship. He is acquitted.
