Quick recap

Victor Hautin, a vice squad inspector, is stubborn, solitary and obsessed: he's sure a theft of government bonds is Arsène Lupin's work and swears to catch him. He goes undercover in the underworld, gets close to a beautiful baroness tangled in the case and follows every lead on a gang that wants the money too. The hunt runs through Paris hotels, cabarets and hideouts, with Lupin himself turning up under a false name. The book is told from the hunter's side, and the cat-and-mouse game with Lupin lasts to the final page.
