Lestat narrates his first days as prince, trying to turn the tribe into one family, with a court at the Lioncourt castle. Louis stands with him, and the elders help set rules for everyone. Rhoshamandes, an ancient vampire banished by the tribe, lives alone on an island and won't accept the new prince. He threatens the court and the people Lestat loves, and Lestat has to decide how far he'll go to protect his own. Along the way, he faces questions about his past and about what ruling means. The book ends with the tribe gathered around Lestat and him fully taking on the role of prince.
