Halloween is coming and Anita is buried in work. The police want her help on a murder committed by vampires, and the trail points to a pack of masterless vampires. An ancient master vampire, Alejandro, comes to town and challenges Jean-Claude. Edward is back, wanting to know where Jean-Claude sleeps by day, and a radical anti-vampire group comes looking for Anita too. She meets Richard Zeeman, a likable teacher, and starts dating him. Alejandro tries to make her his human servant and puts his own marks on her. In the final fight, Anita takes on Alejandro and kills him. Richard turns out to be a werewolf, and Anita ends the book torn between him and Jean-Claude.
