After a sting goes wrong and his partner Tracie Fisher dies, Alex Cross quits the force. He comes back when Megan Rose, a senator's daughter, is taken from her school by Gary Soneji, who had posed as a teacher. Secret Service agent Jezzie Flannigan, blamed for the breach, teams up with him. Soneji is copying the Lindbergh kidnapping and also goes after the Russian president's son, but the two stop him. Cross pays a diamond ransom and later kills Soneji, who knew nothing about a second ransom demand. The missing piece is Jezzie: she had known about Soneji for a while and used him to squeeze the family, with help from agent Ben Devine. Cross tracks her to a farmhouse where she has killed Devine and is about to kill Megan. He shoots her and brings Megan home.
