Quick recap

Yun Tianming, the brain the Staircase project launched into space, is at the center of this parallel story. Baoshu tells what happens to him among the Trisolarans and why he takes on a mission bigger than the war between the two worlds. The plot runs beneath the events of Death's End and then goes past them. It leads to an ancient fight for control of the universe and to a new universe born after the Big Crunch. It's for readers who finished the trilogy and still want answers, though Baoshu makes clear it isn't Liu Cixin's official version.

What changed on screen

  1. Behind the scenesFrom fan to published author

Baoshu wrote the book as fan fiction right after Death's End. Liu Cixin's own publisher, Chongqing Press, released it in 2011 with his permission, as Three-Body X.

  2. Behind the scenesNot canon

Neither Liu Cixin nor the publisher has said whether the story is canon, and Baoshu's own foreword makes no such claim. The English translation is by Ken Liu, who also translated books 1 and 3.
