Rose and Dimitri arrive for her exam and find a Moroi family and their guardians slaughtered. A silver stake at the scene shows the Strigoi had human help. Spooked, the school sends its students to a ski lodge. There, Mia's mother dies in another attack. Rose tells Mason where Strigoi hideouts are, and he, Mia and Eddie sneak off to hunt them in Spokane. Rose and Christian follow, and the group is captured by the Strigoi Isaiah. During the escape, Mason is killed, and Rose kills Isaiah and Elena. Back at school, she earns two molnija marks. Dimitri turns down Tasha Ozera's offer and kisses Rose.
