Rose leaves St. Vladimir's to keep the promise she made Dimitri: kill him before he can live as a Strigoi. She crosses Siberia, finds his family in Baia and joins guardians in Novosibirsk. There, Dimitri captures her and holds her, set on making her choose to become Strigoi too. Rose escapes and stakes him on a bridge. Through the bond, she saves Lissa from a scheme by Avery Lazar. Then she hears of Robert Doru, a spirit user said to have brought a Strigoi back to life, and returns to school. The book ends with a package: her stake and a note from Dimitri saying he's still alive.
