Uhtred is old and wants to spend his last years in peace at Bebbanburg. Æthelstan, now king, swore never to attack Northumbria while Uhtred lived, but his advisers say an oath to a pagan doesn't count, and he invades. Uhtred captures King Guthfrith for him, but trust between them breaks down. Æthelstan sends an envoy with a forged seal to take Bebbanburg, and Uhtred sets a trap that gets rid of him and Guthfrith. Three years later, Anlaf, Constantine and other kings invade. Uhtred picks the battlefield, and Æthelstan wins at Brunanburh. In the end Uhtred is still lord of Bebbanburg and becomes the Lord of the North.
