Quick recap

Ten years after Alfred's death, Uhtred, now past fifty, serves Mercia and Wessex. His elder son becomes a priest, and Uhtred disowns him. In a scuffle he accidentally kills an abbot, and most of his Christian warriors leave him. Cnut Longsword burns his hall. With nothing to lose, Uhtred strikes at Bebbanburg; the raid starts well, but he has to flee. Learning that Cnut is readying for war, Uhtred seizes the enemy's family and burns his boats. At Tettenhall, close to defeat, he is saved by Welsh reinforcements and King Edward's army. In the end he kills Cnut in single combat and survives, badly wounded.
