Three days before Halloween, Mavra demands that Harry find The Word of Kemmler; if he fails, she'll frame Murphy for murder. Harry learns Bob once belonged to Kemmler, the greatest necromancer in a thousand years. He saves medical examiner Waldo Butters from the necromancer Grevane and meets Shiela, who is really the shade of the demon Lasciel, living in his head since he took the coin. Three groups of necromancers want to use two books in a ritual to become a minor god. With Wardens, Butters, Thomas and a zombie T. rex, Harry, now a Warden, stops them. In the end he hands Mavra the book with a warning: threaten his friends again and he'll come for her.
