Quick recap

Every winter, the Guild's magicians drive the poor out of Imardin in the Purge. During one, Sonea throws a stone that breaks through the magical barrier and hurts Lord Fergun. She has untrained magic, and the Guild hunts her down, because that loose power could kill her and level part of the city. Sonea runs with her friend Cery and hides with the Thieves, but her magic spins out of control and Lord Rothen finds her. Rothen and Fergun fight over her guardianship, and Fergun even locks Cery up to blackmail her. To prove Fergun's guilt, Administrator Lorlen reads Sonea's mind and sees what she witnessed in hiding: High Lord Akkarin practicing forbidden black magic. Fergun goes down, and Sonea decides to join the Guild.
