Quick recap

Spring 1809. Captain Hogan sends Lieutenant Sharpe to find Kate Savage, the runaway daughter of a dead Oporto port merchant, and to keep an eye on Colonel James Christopher. The French take Oporto, and Portuguese lieutenant Jorge Vicente saves Sharpe's men. Christopher, a Foreign Office agent, is secretly working with the French: he plans to hand plotters to Marshal Soult in exchange for a monopoly on the port trade, and sham-marries Kate for her inheritance despite having a wife in England. Sharpe survives an attempt on his life and finds the boats that let Wellesley cross the Douro. The French flee along a mountain road, and Sharpe kills Christopher and rescues Kate.
