Quick recap

Years before Will, Baron Morgarath is scheming to take the throne. He keeps King Oswald at Castle Gorlan, accuses Prince Duncan of poisoning his father and starts pushing out the veteran Rangers. Halt and Crowley hear that Duncan is raiding villages and discover he's an impostor, Tiller. Intercepted messages reveal the real Duncan is held at Castle Wildriver. The two gather the dismissed Rangers, Baron Arald and old Pritchard, Halt's mentor. At the tournament at Gorlan, Morgarath unseats Arald with a hidden killing lance, but Duncan, in disguise, steps in and disarms him. King Oswald arrives and exposes the stolen royal seal. Morgarath holes up in his castle and escapes through a secret passage into the Mountains of Rain and Night. Pritchard dies trying to stop him.
