Full story

A demon chases America Chavez and a version of Stephen Strange through a space between universes. They try to reach the Book of Vishanti, but that Strange dies, and a terrified America opens a portal and lands on our Earth with his body. Soon after, Strange and Wong save the girl from another monster in New York, on the day of Christine Palmer's wedding. America explains she can jump between universes, but only when she's scared, and she can't control it.

Strange spots witchcraft runes on the monster and goes to Wanda Maximoff. He learns she's behind it all. After reading the Darkhold, the forbidden book, Wanda has become the Scarlet Witch, and she wants America's power to reach a universe where her sons, Billy and Tommy, are real. For that, America would have to die. Strange refuses, and Wanda storms Kamar-Taj and kills dozens of sorcerers. In a panic, America opens a portal and falls with Strange into Earth-838.

There, Wanda uses the Darkhold to take over the body of her counterpart on that world, who lives a quiet life with her boys. At Kamar-Taj, the sorceress Sara sacrifices herself to destroy the book and break the spell, but Wanda forces Wong to take her to Mount Wundagore, where the Darkhold came from. On Earth-838, Mordo captures Strange and America and brings them to the Illuminati: Mordo, Captain Carter, Black Bolt, Captain Marvel, Reed Richards and Professor Xavier. They explain that their world's Strange used the Darkhold to beat Thanos, caused an entire universe to be destroyed and was executed by them.

Wanda arrives in her 838 counterpart's body and brutally kills nearly all the Illuminati. Strange escapes with America and that world's Christine, a scientist, and they try to grab the Book of Vishanti in the space between universes. Wanda destroys the book, takes control of America and throws Strange and Christine into a ruined universe. There, Strange faces a version of himself corrupted by the Darkhold, wins and uses that same book to possess the dead body of the Strange who fell onto our Earth. With help from Wong and damned spirits, he reaches Wundagore.

Strange tells America she can trust her own power. She takes on Wanda and sends her to Earth-838, face to face with Billy and Tommy. The boys scream in fear and call for their real mother. Wanda realizes what she has done, brings Mount Wundagore down on herself and destroys every copy of the Darkhold across the multiverse. America takes Strange and Christine home. Kamar-Taj is rebuilt and America stays to train. Strange grows a third eye from using the Darkhold. In the mid-credits scene, the sorceress Clea appears and tells him he caused an incursion he must fix. The two step into the Dark Dimension, and that is left open.

5 easter eggs

Hidden details

  1. CameoBruce Campbell and Pizza Poppa

In Universe 838, the pizza ball vendor is Bruce Campbell, Sam Raimi's collaborator since Evil Dead. Strange makes him punch himself, and the final post-credits scene shows the spell lasted until then.

  2. Behind the scenesSam Raimi's Oldsmobile

The 1973 Delta 88, the car Raimi puts in almost every movie, floats among the wreckage of the destroyed universe. There's also a toy version on the floor of Wanda's dream house.

  3. ReferenceXavier's yellow chair

Professor X enters the Illuminati chamber in a yellow hover chair, identical to the one from the '90s X-Men cartoon. The score plays a snippet of that show's theme at the same time.

  4. Behind the scenesGargantos is Shuma-Gorath

The giant one-eyed octopus from the opening is, visually, the Shuma-Gorath from the comics. Rights issues led the movie to rename it Gargantos.

  5. ReferenceA duel of musical notes

In the fight between the two Stranges, the weapons are the notes themselves. You can pick out Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and Bach's Toccata and Fugue during the clash.
