Full story

In 1975, young Jean Grey accidentally causes the car crash that kills her mother. Charles Xavier takes her to his school and promises to help her control her telekinesis. In 1992, the X-Men are celebrities with a direct line to the president. Xavier sends the team into space to rescue the crew of the space shuttle Endeavour, hit by an energy that looks like a solar flare. Jean stays behind and absorbs the whole force into her body. She comes back alive, and stronger than ever. At the celebration party, she loses control for a few seconds. At the same time, a shape-shifting alien race, the D'Bari, arrives on Earth led by Vuk, looking for that energy.

The new power is breaking down the walls Xavier built in Jean's mind. She finds out her father is alive and that the Professor hid it from her. Jean goes to her family's old house. The X-Men try to bring her back, the police show up and it all spins out of control. In the chaos, Jean kills Raven with a telekinetic blast. Beast is devastated, breaks with Xavier and goes looking for Erik.

Jean flees to Genosha, the island Erik set up for mutants, but he sends her away after she wrecks army helicopters. Vuk finds her and explains that the force she carries destroyed the D'Bari homeworld. She offers to teach Jean to control it, but wants the power for herself. Erik and Hank decide to kill Jean. Scott, Storm and Nightcrawler decide to save her. The two groups clash in New York outside the building where Jean is. Xavier climbs the stairs alone, withstands her rage and shows her his memories. Jean comes back to herself, but the army arrests all the mutants.

On the train taking them away, the D'Bari attack. Xavier, Scott, Erik and Hank join forces against them. Jean sees through Vuk, shows up and destroys the aliens. To keep the damage off Earth, she carries Vuk out of the atmosphere, releases all her power and becomes a bird of fire that vanishes into space. The school is renamed the Jean Grey School, with Hank as dean. Xavier, retired in Paris, plays chess with Erik at a café. A flaming phoenix shape appears in the sky.
