Full story
The season opens with a tragedy. Matt Murdock, Foggy Nelson, and Karen Page are celebrating at Josie's bar when Dex, the killer known as Bullseye, attacks and kills Foggy. Matt, as Daredevil, throws Dex off a building and nearly kills him. The episode ends with Matt shattered. A year later, he has hung up the suit, gone back to practicing law on his own, and is trying to play by the rules.
Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin, runs for mayor of New York on an anti-vigilante platform and wins. Matt and Fisk cross paths and strike a tense truce: Matt promises to stop him if he steps out of line, and Fisk warns Matt never to put the mask back on. At home, Fisk deals with Vanessa, who ran the business alone while he was gone and had an affair. Fisk kills her lover, and the couple stays together, more dangerous than ever.
Matt defends Hector Ayala, wrongly accused of murder. Ayala is the White Tiger, and to save him Matt reveals his identity and his good deeds in court. Ayala is acquitted but is soon killed by someone using the Punisher's symbol. Meanwhile, Matt is dating therapist Heather Glenn, who also treats Fisk. A serial killer called Muse, who paints murals with his victims' blood, surfaces in the city. When Muse goes after Heather, Matt puts the suit back on. Heather kills Muse, but the trauma turns her against vigilantes.
Fisk sets up an Anti-Vigilante Task Force full of corrupt cops and uses the Muse case to boost his image. Frank Castle resurfaces. At the mayor's gala, Dex tries to kill Fisk, and Matt takes the bullet to save his enemy. Matt, Karen, and Frank learn that officer Cole North killed Ayala and that the Fisks have turned the Red Hook port into a lawless zone, close to a private city-state. It also comes out that Vanessa ordered Foggy's death because he was getting close to the scheme.
Fisk kills the police commissioner, cuts the city's power, declares martial law, and outlaws vigilantes. Frank is captured and taken to a prison in Red Hook. Heather accepts a post in Fisk's administration. In the end, Matt gathers allies in a bar and announces they are going to take the city back, setting up the war. In the post-credits scene, Frank tricks a guard and breaks out of the prison.
