Boromir dies defending Merry and Pippin, who are carried off by the Uruk-hai. Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli follow the trail into Rohan and find Gandalf again, now the White. The hobbits escape into Fangorn, and Treebeard leads the Ents against Isengard. Gandalf frees King Théoden from Saruman's hold, and Rohan wins at Helm's Deep. Saruman is trapped in Orthanc, and Pippin looks into the palantír. Elsewhere, Frodo and Sam subdue Gollum, who becomes their guide. Faramir lets them go on. Gollum leads them into Shelob's lair, and she stings Frodo. Sam takes the Ring, thinking his friend is dead, then learns Frodo is alive and in orc hands.

What changed in the movie
ChangeAragorn never goes over the cliff
The warg fight that sends Aragorn off a cliff and leaves him for dead was made up for the film. In the book, he stays with the group all the way to Helm's Deep.
In the book, Faramir learns about the Ring, turns down the temptation and lets Frodo and Sam go. In the film, he drags the hobbits to Osgiliath to bring the Ring to his father.
The book ends with Shelob's sting and Frodo carried off by orcs, as Sam realizes he's still alive. The film saves that whole stretch for The Return of the King.
