Quick recap

England, 997. After a Viking raid, young boatbuilder Edgar moves to Dreng's Ferry, the poor village that will one day become Kingsbridge. Norman noblewoman Ragna marries Ealdorman Wilwulf of Shiring and finds out she's his second wife. The monk Aldred dreams of a great library. All three clash with Bishop Wynstan and Wigelm, Wilwulf's half-brothers. Edgar and Aldred build a bridge, which Wynstan and Dreng burn down. Wigelm seizes power, kidnaps Ragna and forces her to marry him; Edgar leaves for France. When a drunk Wigelm attacks her, Ragna suffocates him, and his death is ruled an accident. Edgar returns and marries Ragna, and Wynstan ends up in the leper colony near Kingsbridge.
