Quick recap

In 1993, Ian Malcolm, having survived the Jurassic Park disaster, gives a lecture on extinction. Paleontologist Richard Levine challenges him and talks him into searching for a lost world of dinosaurs: Site B, where InGen bred them. Levine goes ahead and vanishes. Malcolm, Professor Doc Thorne, engineer Eddie Carr and biologist Sarah Harding go after him, with two students stowed away on the trip. On Isla Sorna a rival team hunts for eggs. When the dinosaurs attack, everyone fights to reach the way out.

What changed on screen

  1. ChangeBiosyn vanishes from the film

In the book Malcolm's team faces a rival Biosyn team led by Lewis Dodgson. The film drops Biosyn and sets two InGen teams against each other, one tied to Hammond's nephew.

  2. ChangeTwo teens become one

The book has Kelly and Arby, two students who follow the expedition. In the film they merge into one character, Kelly, played by Vanessa Lee Chester. Doc Thorne is gone too, and part of him lives on in Eddie.

  3. ChangeOnly two ideas survived

Spielberg and Koepp kept from the book a second island of dinosaurs and the trailer dangling off a cliff. The baby rex and the idea of parents tending their young also stayed. The story, though, is new, including the San Diego ending.

  4. Behind the scenesCrichton wasn't even consulted

After finishing the book Crichton was not consulted on the script and only got a copy when he declined to approve certain merchandising rights. Spielberg pressed Koepp harder to watch the 1925 film The Lost World than to read the novel.
