Quick recap

1938. Indy's father, Henry Jones, a medieval literature professor, vanishes while hunting for the Holy Grail. Indy, his friend Marcus Brody and Dr. Elsa Schneider follow the trail from Venice to Austria to Berlin, where the father's diary reveals the way. The Nazis are right behind and capture Henry. Father and son, always bickering, escape together and reach the Grail temple in the desert. There the villains choose badly, and the final trap tests Indy's faith. Indy and his dad make it out alive, but leave the Grail behind.

Hidden details

  1. CameoThe dad is only 12 years older

Sean Connery, who plays Henry Jones Sr., is only 12 years older than Harrison Ford. He turned the part down at first for that reason, then came around. Spielberg had him in mind from the start.

  2. CameoRiver Phoenix is young Indy

In the 1912 opening, teenage Indy is played by River Phoenix. Ford recommended him: he'd already played Ford's son in The Mosquito Coast (1986), and Ford thought he looked the most like him at that age.

  3. ReferenceFamiliar faces among the Nazis

In the Berlin book-burning scene, Michael Sheard plays Hitler with no lines. He was already the U-boat commander in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Nearby is Ronald Lacey, the first film's Toht, now playing Himmler.
