The novella takes place right after The Primal of Blood and Bone. Poppy is in stasis, her body broken and her power spent, caught in dreams beyond the mortal realm. Casteel tries to go on in a world without her, and Kieran holds together a kingdom shaken by loss. In short chapters, the story shows the moments book 6 skipped: how each of them handles the wait, what Poppy sees while she sleeps and what they learn about who they really are. It's a direct bridge to The Throne of Bone and Ash, the book that will close the series, and it ends with everything set for the final battle.
