Gaal Dornick leaves Synnax to work with Hari Seldon on Trantor. Hari's psychohistory predicts the fall of the Empire, and Brother Day sends the mathematician and his followers to the remote planet Terminus. On the way, Hari is murdered and Gaal is ejected into space in a pod. Decades later on Terminus, Warden Salvor Hardin faces an invasion from Anacreon and learns the Vault holds a copy of Hari. At the palace, a plot to topple the dynasty runs through Brother Dawn, Demerzel kills him, and Day learns he may have been altered too. Gaal reaches Synnax 138 years later and finds it in ruins. There she meets Salvor, who has learned she is Gaal and Raych's daughter.
