Ana Steele, a student, interviews billionaire Christian Grey in place of her roommate. The meeting turns into a relationship where he only accepts rules he writes himself. Ana tells it all in first person, caught between fascination and fear. She reads the contract Christian offers, argues every clause and must decide how far she will go. First volume of the trilogy, published in 2011. Adult romance with explicit sex scenes. Ana shares a place with her friend Kate and works at a hardware store. The book ends with her deciding to leave.

What changed on screen

  1. ChangeWho tells the story

The book is told from Ana's point of view. Only in 2015, with Grey, does E. L. James retell it through Christian's eyes. The 2015 film shows both from the outside, with no one's inner voice.

  2. ChangeAn alternate ending

The unrated Blu-ray adds three minutes, mostly an alternate ending: Christian jogs in the rain, Ana cries at home, and he finds a gift from her with a note.
