Dragonwatch, the ancient order of wizards, enchantresses and dragon slayers, is falling apart. Celebrant, King of the Dragons and co-caretaker of Wyrmroost, sees the sanctuaries as prisons and wants to bring back the Age of Dragons. The wizard Agad reaches out to Grandpa Sorenson, and Kendra, now 15, and Seth, 13, become Wyrmroost's new caretakers. Celebrant accepts them but keeps testing the barriers and their authority. The siblings learn that a hidden scepter, joined with the caretakers' medallion, can strengthen the defenses. With help from the nipsie Calvin, their cousin Knox and other allies, they find the scepter and get it past a dragon blockade. At the end, they learn dragonkind is in open revolt and other sanctuaries have already fallen.
