The Clan of the Cave Bear

An earthquake leaves five-year-old Ayla alone. Nearly killed by a cave lion, she is found by Iza, healer of a Neanderthal clan. Chief Brun accepts the girl once the shaman Creb finds that her totem is the Cave Lion, almost unheard of for a woman. Without the Clan's ancestral memories, Ayla learns everything by doing and trains as a healer under Iza. She breaks taboos, like the one against women using weapons. Broud, Brun's son, hates her and rapes her, and she has Durc, a boy the Clan sees as deformed. Iza dies. Broud becomes leader and puts the death curse on Ayla. An earthquake kills Creb, and Ayla leaves to find her own people, with Durc under Brun's protection.

1. ChangeCreb survives

   In the book, an earthquake kills Creb at the end, shortly before Ayla leaves. In the movie, Broud banishes him and then lets him stay, and Creb is still alive when Ayla goes.
