Zach Cooper has just moved to Madison, Delaware, with his mom. He befriends his neighbor Hannah and classmate Champ, and he's the one who finds out what the house next door is hiding. Dylan Minnette plays him.
Zach lost his father and moves with his mom, Gale, to Madison, where she's starting as the school's vice principal. He doesn't want to be there and doesn't know anyone. The first person who catches his eye is Hannah, the girl next door who seems stuck at home by a very strict father.
Sure that Hannah is in danger, Zach sneaks into the house next door with his friend Champ. There they find the locked Goosebumps manuscripts. Zach opens one by accident and frees the Abominable Snowman of Pasadena. It kicks off a night when the monsters from the books take over Madison.
With the monsters loose, Zach, Hannah and Champ stick by Stine, who has to write a new story to trap them all. Zach takes on Slappy and the other creatures through the streets and the school while the writer works. The adventure also brings Zach and Hannah closer.
In the end, Zach learns that Hannah also came from Stine's imagination and watches his friend get trapped with the monsters. The loss doesn't last: Stine rewrites her story and brings her back, and Zach finds her again at school.
Zach was created for the movie and doesn't exist in the Goosebumps books.
