Malorie Hayes

Malorie is pregnant and not sure she wants to be a mother. Her sister Jessica takes her to a checkup. At the hospital, a woman bashes her head against the glass until she dies, and panic sweeps the city. On the way home, Jessica sees something, crashes the car and steps in front of a truck.

Alone in the street, Malorie watches people killing themselves around her. A woman tries to help and dies in a burning car. Tom, a stranger, pulls her into a house full of strangers, where she spends her first sleepless night.

The group covers the windows and only goes out blindfolded. Charlie, who works at a grocery store, thinks it's the end of the world. Olympia, another pregnant woman, shows up later and becomes Malorie's friend. Greg, who owns the house, dies testing whether it's safe to watch the creatures on camera.

On a supply run in a car with the windows painted black, Charlie sacrifices himself to save the others. Malorie comes back with a cage of birds that get agitated when the creatures are near.

Lucy and Felix run off with the car. Olympia lets in Gary, a man asking for shelter. The night Malorie and Olympia give birth, Gary shows who he is: he has already seen the creatures and wants everyone to see them. He uncovers the windows. Olympia looks and jumps, Cheryl hurts herself and Douglas is killed. Tom kills Gary.

Malorie is left with two babies, her son and Olympia's daughter. She calls them only Boy and Girl.

Five years later, Malorie and Tom are raising the kids under strict rules. A radio call tells of a refuge downriver. As they leave, survivors who have already seen the creatures attack, and Tom dies protecting the family.

Malorie rows downriver blindfolded with the kids and the birds. She fights off a man who tries to make them look, gets through the rapids and loses the kids in the woods, where voices try to trick them. The three reach an old school for the blind. There, Malorie sets the birds free, names the children Tom and Olympia and tells them she is their mother.

Malorie comes from Josh Malerman's 2014 novel, set in Michigan. The book got a sequel, Malorie (2020), which follows her years later. Sandra Bullock plays her in the movie.
