Butch is a cop in Caldwell, a city where a secret war plays out in the shadows: vampire warriors against lessers, soulless humans serving the Omega. He knows none of this, but he knows Beth and has feelings for her. When Beth's life starts crossing with Wrath's, Butch gets suspicious and decides to come clean: he tells her how he feels. It's not the answer he hoped for, but Butch doesn't back off.
When Beth's transition begins, Butch is the one who brings her to Wrath. That's how he meets the whole Brotherhood and crosses the line that keeps humans out of that world. At the Brothers' house, Butch starts learning how vampires live, their rules, rituals and enemies. He's the only human there, which both fascinates him and leaves him on the outside. Even so, the Brothers come to trust him.
In the final episode, Mr. X kidnaps Beth. Wrath rallies the Brotherhood for the rescue and brings Butch along. The cop, with no fangs and none of the vampires' strength, joins the fight beside them at nightfall.
In the books, Butch gets his own romance in Lover Revealed, book 4.
