Vento em setembro, by Tony Bellotto, runs across two timelines. The first is Assis, in the São Paulo countryside, in the 1970s. Rancher Máximo Leonel, owner of several farms, throws a lavish party to mark his youngest son Alexandre's first night with a woman. He hires Laura, the most sought-after call girl in the state capital.
The party ends in chaos, and Alexandre vanishes without a trace. His disappearance becomes a mystery that hangs over the family and the town.
The second timeline is the present, in Ouro Preto. A wave of graffiti on historic buildings outrages the country. Davi, a journalist and writer who wrote a book about the work of the sculptor Aleijadinho, starts to suspect the attacks are tied to his book. When he pulls that thread, he lands in a plot that began more than fifty years earlier.
The story also moves through Santos, Greece and Mexico City, with the repression of Brazil's military dictatorship in the background.
